First Fullface Helmet

Well I finally picked up my first fullface helmet. I picked the O’Neil 507 fullface helmet for 70 bucks at some motocross store. I also threw in some Scott Goggles for 25 bucks to protect my eyes from bugs flying in. Since this was my first fullface helmet, I didn’t really know what to expect.

The first thing I did was to test out the helmet to make sure it fit. You generally want the helmet to fit snugly and not move around. However, you do not want it so tight that it restricts your movement. You also don’t want it so tight that it hurts your head, as you want to feel comfortable in it for long periods of time. One more thing to keep in mind is that you generally want the helmet to be light so it can be somewhat manueverable. Heavy helmets are generally more protective but some riders have reported that it is extremely difficult to keep their heads up when hitting the pavement. Light helmets will also be easier on your deck when doing those ten minute runs. Another thing to keep in mind is the SNELL/DOT ratings. Most helmets are DOT rated, meaning they have met standards for DOT. These are usually good enough. The SNELL rating is the worldwide standard, and it doesn’t hurt to have both of these ratings on your helmet. However, having only a DOT rating does not mean it is worse. In fact, some DOT only rating are actually better. If this is your first helmet, just make sure it is DOT ready.

After picking out my fullface, I decided to take it for a test run. The first thing I noticed was how quiet everything was. Without feeling the wind in my face, I couldn’t get a feel for how fast I was going. I took it to about 35 miles an hour but it didn’t feel that fast, which can be a good thing because I can go faster, but then it’s bad at the same time that I can’t judge my speed as well. After a couple runs I had a better sense of my speed but it still wasn’t as good. I guess with further experience I’ll be able to tell.

I suggest all you downhill longboarders to get a fullface helmet because it will definitely build up your confidence. And of course, it adds more protection and you feel safer. You probably don’t need it when your just cruising though, as it is pretty heavy and bulky. Just stick with your other brain bucket.
